Individual Investment Account
This is a traditional investment account either owned by one person or multiple people in a joint account. There are no IRS rules as to how much you can put into this account or when you can take it out. You can take money out of this type of account whenever you want without penalties. We can use any investment in this type of account (stocks, bonds, mutual funds, UIT’s, etc.). When you sell a position in an individual account, you will be taxed on a capital gain (Short or Long Term) basis. Capital gains tax rates are usually less than income tax rates. There is extreme flexibility with these types of accounts.
Traditional IRA
Money goes in pre tax which you can deduct off your taxes, comes out after 59.5 yrs old and you pay income taxes on every dollar that comes out. Before 59.5, there is a 10% IRS penalty and taxes. At 70.5 yrs old, you have to start taking money out of an IRA on an annual basis according to a formula by the IRS.
Roth IRA
Money goes in “after tax” and comes out completely tax free after 59.5 yrs of age. Investors can always get at their contributions without tax or penalty at any age. SEP IRA This is for a self employed person (SEP). The same rules apply to SEP IRAs as Traditional IRAs as far as taxes are concerned.
Simple IRA
A Simple IRA is an IRA utilized by small businesses. All contributions into a Simple IRA come through the payroll from the employer (sometimes referred to as a poor man’s 401k). For employers, it is less expensive than a 401k and can accomplish almost the same things. Simple IRAs are perfect for small businesses. They follow the same rules as Traditional and SEP IRAs (as far as taxes). Employers will match, dollar-for-dollar, employee contributions up to a certain amount.
Pension/Profit Sharing
A Profit-Sharing plan is a plan setup by an employer that states that if there is a certain profit earned, each employee will share in that profit and a % of that profit will be put into their personal accounts.
Solo 401k
A Solo 401k is another type of plan for a self-employed person. You can contribute up to $55,000 into this type of plan. It is for a one-person business. The same tax rules as Traditional, SEP, and Simple IRAs apply.
